SUMMARY:Ethical Dissertation Writing: Reuse\, Permission\, and References
DESCRIPTION:This session\, led by Judith Currano\, the head of Penn’s
Chemistry Library and former chair of the American Chemical Society’s
Committee on Ethics\, will examine ethical norms surrounding the reuse and
documentation of your own and others’ previously-published work in your
dissertation. We will have a candid conversation about ways in which you
can determine whether you require permission to include reprinted material
in your dissertation and look at a few different workflows for requesting
permission and documenting the fact that permission was granted. We will
also briefly touch on the subjects of including collaborative work in your
thesis or dissertation and post-thesis publication of your Penn research.
Finally\, we will examine some reference management systems that you can
use to keep your references organized and accessible and format your
dissertation in the style required by your department. While this workshop
may not give you all the answers (these are complex subjects that
frequently toe the line between ethics and copyright law)\, it will
definitely help you ask the right questions!\n\nLocation: Graduate Student
 Center | 3615 Locust Walk | Third Floor\, Room 304\n\nThis event is
co-sponsored by Penn Libraries and the Graduate Degrees Team in the Office
