Inclusive Course Design Through the Syllabus Mini Course In-Person
Instructor: Ali Noori
Thursdays 12-1:30p
Dates: 3/31 - 4/7 - 4/14 - 4/21- 4/28
The syllabus is a critical (and often first) point of contact between students and their instructors. Centering the syllabus as a manifestation of course design, this mini-course considers principles of equity and inclusivity and explores ways of meaningfully integrating them into the structure of a course. In addition to readings and discussions, every participant will work on a syllabus of their own over five weekly sessions. By the end, participants will have designed a syllabus draft that intends to address some of the inequities that affect students, paying special attention to the particular histories of various disciplines and discipline-specific inequities.
Mini Course: Special Topics in Inclusive & Equitable Teaching
Educators are responsible for creating classes in which all students feel welcome and capable of succeeding. Over five weekly meetings, participants will complete a series of readings, engage in discussion on inclusive teaching, and identify skills and practices to implement in their classes to make these more inclusive and equitable. Open to Penn doctoral and terminal master’s students and postdocs. Attendance counts as two workshops towards the CTL Teaching Certificate. Workshops that count toward a TA Certificate are co-sponsored by CTL and the Grad Center.
