Poets Who Translate

Poets Who Translate In-Person

Poets who Translate is hosting their first reading in over a year, on Wednesday, October 22–– with poets Ron Silliman, Ivan Sokolov, and Sara Gilmore. The reading will be held on the patio of Dahlak Paradise 4708 Baltimore Avenue (which was, incidentally, featured last August on Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service). Come early to get a drink and some extraordinary Ethiopian & Eritrean food. Reading starts at 7pm sharp.

A few things about the evening’s poets:

Poet, critic, and activist Ron Silliman is one of the originators of Language poetry––or maybe better put, one of the forces articulating the Language tendency in American poetry––alongside Lyn Hejinian, Charles Bernstein, Rae Armantrout, Leslie Scalapino and others. Ron is the author of over 40 books of poetry and criticism and the recipient of numerous honors and awards. His work has been translated into fourteen languages.

Ivan Sokolov is a poet, translator and critic from Russia. Author of five books of poetry, he now writes across Russian and English. A selection of his work translated by Elina Alter appeared in the Deep Vellum anthology Verses on the Vanguard, and his English poems have been published in The Swan’s Rag. Sokolov’s Russian translations include works by Gertrude Stein, Paul Celan, Joe Brainard and Ron Silliman. His English translations of contemporary Russian authors are available in World Lit TodayTraffika EuropePunctured Lines and The Back Room

Sara Gilmore is a poet and translator from the Spanish. Her work has appeared in Ugly Duckling Presse's Second Factory and 6x6The Iowa ReviewAnnulet: A Journal of Poetics, and The Paris Review. Her first poetry collection, The Green Lives, is out this fall from Fonograf Editions.
